As a law-abiding and economically active South African, I am obliged to support my government and the Fiscus by paying my fair share of income tax. Unfortunately for me (read us) income tax is not the only area where the government gets its proverbial pound of flesh.

Here is a decently long list provided by SARS that details the various taxes and levies within South Africa.

After you have lost your soul in reading through all the technical and mind-numbing jargon it becomes pretty clear that income tax is really only one area in which I am (read: we are)…

Arguably the only joy of being in a covid-19 lockdown is that it gives you a lot of time for introspection. Taking stock of where you are in the world and everything that is happening around you.

As somewhat of a self-confessed overthinker; this extended period of self-reflection can pose some depressing challenges, but the intention of this piece is not to unveil the inner detritus of my inner psyche; but rather to share some musings around the theories I have been exposed to and tried to stack together perhaps as a proxy for you to use for your own…

The people we meet, the time that we meet them? Is it all just chance?

Just random atoms bouncing around the vastness of the universe, on a random trajectory that then happen to collide... Or is there no such thing as chance? Is there a plan, a pattern, a force that guides the spaces between the spaces as much as anything else...

I wonder a lot about why people come into one's life at certain times... what are they meant to teach you, show you, give you?

Every meeting has a purpose. Every crossed lifeline: a lesson.

Sloan Management Review — Innovation

Economies are stalling. The world as we know it has changed. The status quo has been irreversibly altered and none of this is a bad thing as this is the breeding ground for innovation.

The thing with a pandemic like this (or any crisis for that matter) is that there are two ways to respond. The first is to sit in the corner and lament the fact that the world has changed and what worked yesterday won’t work tomorrow. The second is to innovate, adapt and create the new normal!

Of course, this needs to be done with deliberate thought…

South Africa is halfway through day one of a national Lockdown. The lockdown is scheduled to last 21 days in an effort to flatten the Covid-19 transmission curve.

The health care systems capacity curve

The curve, we have all recently become familiar with, expresses the level at which hospitals and healthcare professionals become unable to successfully cope and treat the new Covid-19 infections. Basically, the steeper and more pronounced the curve, the less we are coping.

The situation is critical. The outlook is dim (pun intended). As we are plunged once again into darkness; this time with the new excitement of Load Shedding Stage 6; perhaps we should use this night time solace as a Government imposed pause for some reflection and introspection on our power crisis.

How The Power Utility Got Here

Let’s start with some reflection on how we got here, as expressed from the Eskom COO, Jan Oberholzer and summarised below:

  1. Eskom has not done maintenance on its power stations and boilers in 10 years (that’s ten years); that means that when inevitable wear-and-tear happens, boilers need to be…

Entrepreneurs, no matter what the phase of their journey they are in, are always looking for someone to invest in them.

I can hear the arguments starting to form in your minds already; so let me contextualize what I am saying.

Finance In My Business

The first thing is first. Money. That’s what comes into the minds of most folk when you say “invest”.

We are all looking for a silver bullet when it comes to unlocking the secrets of success. Some people attribute their success to early mornings. Others pin it to being tougher negotiators. And they are not wrong, those are all elements of their success. The fundamental golden thread that needs to be weaved through every manifestation of success is quite simple, however: consistency.

There is a multitude of books that claim to have hidden secrets to success. There are hundreds of articles online like 4 Secrets of Insanely Successful People which quite honestly doesn’t give any bad advice.

Then there…

It is important to state upfront that this is not a political nor racially motivated post. This is a post that is trying to objectively look at the facts around technology adoption and the way in which the 4th Industrial Revolution is going to affect each and every one of us. Whether we like it or not.

The Cold Light of Day

The official unemployment figures for South Africa came out yesterday (30 July, 2019) and they are staggering.
